Tottenham Hotspur FC on Friday confirmed the sacking of head coach Ange Postecoglou after guiding the club to their first trophy win in 17 years.
Postecoglou, 59, ended Spurs’ trophy drought after beating Manchester United 1-0 on May 21, 2025, to win the Europa League at San Mamés in Bilbao, Spain.
The Europa League victory also secured a spot for Spurs to play in the UEFA Champions League next season.
Despite winning a trophy for Spurs, the London club overall had a bad season, losing a staggering 22 games – the worst league record for a side that avoids relegation – and also ending the season on 17th on the table.
Reports have suggested that the club owner Daniel Levy wants a side that can compete on multiple fronts, leading to the termination of Postecoglou’s contract.
In a statement, Spurs noted that under Postecoglou’s two-year spell the club recorded their worst ever Premier League points – a total of 78 in 66 matches

SPURS’ STATEMENT
The statement partly read: “Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the Club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties,.. while writing a new chapter in our history by leading us to UEFA Europa League glory in Bilbao last month – an achievement that will live with us all forever.
“Following a positive start in the 2023/24 Premier League (PL) season, we recorded 78 points from the last 66 PL games. This culminated in our worst-ever PL finish last season. At times there were extenuating circumstances – injuries and then a decision to prioritise our European campaign. Whilst winning the Europa League this season ranks as one of the Club’s greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph.
“It is crucial that we are able to compete on multiple fronts and believe a change of approach will give us the strongest chance for the coming season and beyond.”
Postecoglou joined Spurs from Celtic on 2023 and had a start – won eight out of ten Premier zoeague games – and won three consecutive manher of the month awards.
He told fans of the club he always wins a trophy in his second season and he did, only that he won’t be their head coach going forward.
The likes of Brentford’s Thomas Frank, Fulham’s Marco Silva and Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola are shortlisted to take over at Tottenham Stadium.
