Several candidates sitting for the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) sustained various degrees of injuries followokg the collapsed of their classrooms during the exam.
According to the Punch Newspaper, the incident took place at the Government Secondary School, Namnai, in Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba State on Wednesday evening.
Students, corps members, teachers, and external supervisors were trapped in the collapsed structure and it took locals who swiftly came to their aid to rescue them.
According to reports, some of the victims suffered limb fractures.
Briefly.ng learnt that the victims are undergoing medical treatment at a nearby primary health care centre in the town.
A resident of the community who spoke to journalists, Alhaji DanAzumi Lauris, said the incident happened around 6pm and it was caused by heavy downpour.
He also noted that the first set of candidates had already finished the exam and left, it was the second batch who were caught in the incident.
In his words, “It was the second batch of students still writing their exams that got trapped. The first set had already finished and left.
“The rain came suddenly with strong winds, and the old classroom structures couldn’t withstand it.”
