Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has called for the creation of an additional state in the southeast geopolitical zone.
According to him, the state creation will give people of the region sense of belonging owing to the fact that the southeast is the only region with fewer states.
Mbah made the remarks when he received the Senate Committee on Constitution Amendment at the Government House in Enugu on Thursday.
The meeting is part of the committee’s preparation for the regional public hearing on constitution amendment scheduled for Friday.
Also, the governor expressed his excitement that the committee is considering the creation of a state police.
In his words, “We have advocated fervently that there is a need for states to create state police services, just as you have the federal police, but with defined jurisdictions and operational parameters.
“We think that this is overdue and there is no better time for that than now, given the fragilities we have in our various communities.
“The state police will be a truly welcome development in our constitution. We also believe that since the South East is the only zone with five states in the country, this should be corrected during this process of amendment.”
Mbah made an argument for the need of a rotational presidency, saying this will give an opportunity to every region to produce a president.
“These are areas we believe are amendable and we will be presenting our position formally in the hearing on Friday and subsequent days,” he added.
