Mrs Maryam, the widow of former Military Head of State Sani Abscha, has dismissed the long-standing claim that her late husband looted Nigeria’s finds.
In an interview on TVC on Sunday, she said there is no credible evidence to support the claim that her husband looted billions while he was presiding over the affairs of the country.
According to her, no witnesses or signatures exist to support that her husband stashed money oversees.
She also claimed that Abacha saved money for Nigerians, which all disappeared few months after his death.
“Who is the witness of the monies that were being stashed? Did you see the signature or the evidence of any monies stashed abroad?” she asked, as reported by the Punch Newspaper.
“And the monies that my husband kept for Nigeria, in a few months, the monies vanished. People are not talking about that.”
While reactibr to the nature of the country’s economy during her husband’s tenure, she noted that how could he has looted funds when Nigeria foreign reserve increased and external dents decreased.
Mrs Maryam faulted the continued focus on her husband’s legacy after almost 30 years since his death and also the media for not playing a more constructive role.
“People are not that bad,” she added. “Twenty-seven years ago, and you are still talking about Abacha. He must be very powerful and loved by Nigerians. We thank God for that.”
