Liverpool FC on Thursday confirmed reaching a deal with Bayer Leverkusen to sign right-back Jeremie Frimpong when the transfer window officially opens on Sunday.
According to Sky Sports, Liverpool have trigged Frimpong’s €35 million (£29.5m) release clause, and the 24-year-old Dutch player will sign a six-year contract with the Premier League champions.
Briefly.ng learnt that all parties have already agreed on every aspect of the deal with Liverpool completing the transfer fee in three installment.
Celtic, a side which sold Frimpong’s to Leverkusen in 2021 after signing him from Manchester City’s academy for €300,000 in September 2019, will receive around £5 million for a sell-on clause.
Frimpong played a pivotal role in Leverkusen’s domestic double win in 2023-24 season, scoring 14 goals and providing 12 assists in 47 games across all competitions.
Last season, he scored just fice goals and provided 12 assists across 48 games.
Frimpong expressed excitement when speaking to the Reds’ website, saying he had a conversation with head coach Arne Slot and he spoke positively of him.
He noted that some of his national team teammates at Feyenoord spoke highly of Slot, describing him as the best coach they’ve ever had.
“So, I’ve always heard good things about the coach. Now he’s going to be my coach, so I’m excited for that,” he added.
Liverpool is strengthening their squad as Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to join Real Madrid.
Frimpong is believed not to be Arnold’s replacement – Conor Bradley will likely be first right-back choice – and just signed a contract extension of four years.
