The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on Monday landed in Benue State after suspected herdsmen attacked and killed scores in Gomu Local Goverent Area.
The Nigeria Police Force, in a statement on its X social media platform, confirmed IGP Egbetokun’s arrival in the state.
The statements read, “IGP arrives Benue, orders for additional deployment of tactical teams.”
The IGP’s actions come after suspected herdsmen attacked the local government and killed at least 45 people during their two-day spree.
Local leaders, however, said the death toll could rise to over 200 as entire families, including security operatives, were reportedly burned alivd.
The consistent attacks in Benue have left Nigerians furious, with many calling on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in the state.
Some Nigerians faulted President Bola Tinubu for failing to take concrete action, saying Rivers State never experienced this level of destruction before emergency rule was declared.
