The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, on Friday confirmed his defection from the People’s Democratic Party to the ruling All Progressive Congress.
According to him, he came to this conclusion after three months of wide consultation across the state.
Eno, who made this known in Uyo, the state’s capital, noted that residents of Akwa Ibom are aware of his potential move to the APC in the past months.
He said his resignation letter has already been delivered to the PDP at the “ward level” and also to the “party’s state and national chairmen”.
“Today, I am here to answer to some of those nagging questions,” he said, as reported by
theCable. “Earlier this morning, I submitted a formal letter of resignation from the PDP to the ward chairman.
“Same copy has been sent to both the state chairman as well as the national chairman.
“I want to thank the PDP for their support, for their love and for working with me this past two years in the affairs of running the state of Akwa Ibom across party lines, but this is a defining moment.”
Eno’s defection came weeks after informing his commissioners and political appointees to join him to the APC or resign.
In a video shared by Channels Television, he cited the ongoing crisis within the PDP as the reason for his defection.
According to him the PDP is not a stable party and he wouldn’t want to win an election only to lose on technical grounds.
“We’ve worked very hard, but we know that at the national level, that (PDP) is not coming together,” he said, as reported by the Punch Newspaper.
“Every day, secretary this and that, and so you take your form, they send it to INEC, and then you run all the elections, you perhaps win the elections and just on technical grounds, because the wrong person signed your form, you lose everything.”
