Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey has been charged with rape and sexual assault.
According to reports, the incident allegedly took place between 2021 and 2022 and involved three women.
Partey is facing a six-count charge – five of rape and one of sexual assault.
Accordong to Sky Sports, “two counts of rape relate to one woman, three counts of rape relate to a second woman and one count of sexual assault relates to a third woman”.
The London’s Metropolitan Police, however, noted that the midfielder denied all the charges and he is due to appear before London’s Westminster Magistrates’ Court on August 5.
The Met Police first arrested him in July 2022 before being released. While the midfielder continued playing for Arsenal, the investigation were ongoing.
Partey’s lawyer Jenny Wiltshire of Hickman and Rose said it’s an opportunity for the midfielder to clear his name, stating that he fully cooperates with the police and the Crown Prosecution Service during their three years of investigation.
Wiltshire, in a statement, said, “Thomas Partey denies all the charges against him. He has fully cooperated with the police and CPS throughout their three-year investigation.
“He now welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name. Given that there are now ongoing legal proceedings, my client is unable to comment further.”
Partey, who joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid in 2020 for £45 million, saw his contract with the Gunners expire on Monday, and he is now a free agent.
He made 52 appearances for the Gunners last season in all competitions.
