The former goalkeeper of the Nigeria national team, Peter Rufai, has died at age 61.
The Super Eagles announced his passing in a statement on the X social media account on Thursday, praising him for his contributions to the country’s football history.
The statement read, “Forever in our hearts, Dodo Mayana. We mourn the passing of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, a giant of Nigerian football and a 1994 AFCON champion.
“Your legacy lives on between the sticks and beyond. Rest well, Peter Rufai.”
Rufai, fondly known as ‘Dodo Mayans’ was key to the Super Eagles’ 1994 African Cup of Nations win and also to the country’s first FIFA World Cup qualification that same year.
He recordered 65 caps for the Super Eagles’ and played in both the 1994 and 1998 World Cups. Nigerian and football world is morning the legendary goalkkeper.
