CEO of Tesla and X Elon Musk has resigned from his position as the head of department of government efficiency (DOGE) after four months in charge.
Musk, who made this announcement late Wednesday evening, thanked President Donald Trump for the opportunity and clarified that their relationship had not ge strained.
The billionaire noted that he served as a Special Government Employee and his tenure lasted for 130 days and ended on Thursday, May 29, 2025.
He adviced the public to ignore legacy media assertions on his departure from the White House.
“In the coming days, legacy media will try to convince you that President Trump and Elon Musk are no longer friends and that’s why Musk left,” he posted on X.
“What they won’t tell you is that Elon was a Special Government Employee, limited to 130 days of service and that term ends tomorrow.”
Meanwhile, Musk noted that DOGE will continue to carry out it activities.
Musk’s resignation has sparked concerns due to his influence within the Trump administration.
He championed the cutting of excessive government spending and claimed DOGE has saved taxpayers $160 billion after shrinking 11 agencies and costing over 250,000 federal workers their jobs.
But a budget model that tracks the US government weekly treasury data by the University of Pennsylvania showed that the Trump administration has spent more within the same period when compare with former President Joe Biden’s government last year.
Before he departed, Musk, recently criticised Trump-backed spending bill “Big Beautiful Bill”. He expressed his fraustration with the bill, saying it undermines the DOGE’s work by increasing the deficit.
“I think a bill can be big, or it can be beautiful, but I don’t know if it can be both, in my personal opinion,” Musk noted.
Many Americans especially the supporters of Democrats had kicked against Musk’s involvement in the government, saying they did not vote for him.
Trump is yet to react to Musk’s resignation from his administration.
