Lagos Court has sentenced one Sodiq Oyewummi to twelve months imprisonment after being convicted of stealing electrical cables.
Briefly.ng learnt that officials at the facility of the Wastewater Treatment Plant in the Oke-Afa area of Lagos State caught Oyewummi while he was actively engaging in the theft of cables.
The officials of the facility, managed by the the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office, then handed him over to the Lagos State Taskforce Environmental and Special Offences Court for prosecution.
The state charged him with a three-count charge, which includes “conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, willful damage to government property, and theft of government property”.
Oyewummi pleaded guilty to the first and third charges and was convicted and sentenced to 12 months imprisonment.
Reacting to the Oyewummi’s conviction, the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office General Manager, Adefemi Afolabi, noted the importance of the swift legal action.
According to him, it would serve as a clear deterrent to others.
In his words, “This conviction reinforces the Lagos State Government’s zero-tolerance policy on public infrastructure vandalism.”
