Joshua Lawson, a student of Babcock University has reportedly cpmmotted suicide after being handed a one-year academic session suspension for examination malpractice.
According to the Guardian, the student took his own life at his family home in Lagos on Wednesday, 25 June 2025.
Lawson, a 400-year computers science student was supposed to graduate with his peers on July 27 but was found guilty of the offence by the school’s disciplinary committee and suspended him for one year.
Bancock’s Director of Communication and Marketing, Joshua Suleiman, said the incident occured off the school’s campus and dismissed claims on social media that the 20-year-old student was not given fair hearing to defend himself.
“He was a 400-level student,” the school spokesperson said. “He faced the university disciplinary committee for examination malpractice, was found guilty, and handed a one-year academic suspension.
He was given an opportunity for a fair hearing according to the university’s rules.”
A social media user accused the school of ignoring his appeal mail after many weeks and when Babcock’s management eventually responded he was asked to come over and when he got to the school “they laugh in his face, letting him know that if he is still standing his ground, he is wasting his time. Wicked lots”.
“False accusations with no proof at all and then refusing to listen to their side, enforcing guilt on them,” the user added. “All this in their final year, a very pivotal moment in one’s life, and after writing exams.”
Students have called on the school to ease its strict penalties.
