Chairman of the Dangote Petroleum Refiney, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, has said Nigerians are not aware they pay 55 per cent on petrol when compared to neighbouring countries.
According to Dangote, citizens of other African countries pay roughly $1 per litre, which is around N1600, but at his refinery petrol are being sold for N815 to N820.
The billionaire businessman made this comparison when he toured the 650,000 barrels-per-day capacity refinery with the delegates from the Economic Community of West African States Commission.
The Dangote Group, in a statement on Sunday, noted that President of ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, spearheaded the delegates to the facility.
“In neighbouring countries, the average price of petrol is around $1 per litre, which is N1,600,” Dangote said. “But here at our refinery, we’re selling at between N815 and N820.
“Many Nigerians don’t realise that they are currently paying just 55 per cent of what others in the region are paying for petrol.”
He said refining petrol locally has helped reduce its price and costs of production across all sectors of the economy and wants Nigerians to know that the refinery is “built for them, and they will enjoy the maximum benefit from it.”
Dangote calls for stronger trade among African countries, saying Africa’s heavy dependence on imported goods cannot be sustained.
“As long as we continue importing what we can produce, we will remain underdeveloped,” he added. “This refinery is proof that we can build for ourselves at scale, to global standards,”
