Governor Alex Otti of Abia State on Wednesday noted that his administration will only embark on borrowing when necessary.
Otti, who made this vow after being urged to borrow more in order to complete ongoing projects and to embark on newer ones, sought to turn Abia into “the hub of transformational ideas” (The Punch Newspaper.
He made this statement at a lecture in Umahi, the state capital, to mark the two years of his administration.
Idika Kalu, a former one-time Minister of Finance, who was invoted to the grace the occasion, advised the governor to borrow and stated that such borrowing was not bad as long as it is done with the interest of the people the state at heart.
In response, Otti maintained that it’s important to inculcated financial “discipline and responsibility in the system”, while noting that he’d only borrow when necessary.
Kalu commended the governor’s performsnce and urged to always abode by the rule of law and to punish errant persons who carried out impunity in the state. He tasked him to utilise the media to push for change in his development efforts.
“The media can help this nation get back to life so don’t give them minor roles but give them key roles,” he told the governor.
