The former Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, on Thursday said he will only aerve a single term if the opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress chooses him as the party presidential candidate in the 2027 election.
Amaechi, who served as the Minister of Transportation for eight years during the tenure of former President Muhammwdu Buhari, said the south should be allowed to complete an eight-year presidency.
Speaking on Channels Television’s “Politics Today” programme, he said he fought the Goodluck Jonathan administration because the former presodent reneged on the deal that he would only aerve a four-year term.
He called for the unwritten rotational rules between the southern and the northern regions of the country to be sustained.
“Of course. I told you. You know that I speak my mind,” he said when asked if he will accept a single term deal. “If I won’t do more than four years, I would say that. If I were to do more than four years, I would say I would do more than four.”
“For now, the way Nigeria is, you must keep to that agreement—unwritten agreement – that says South eight years, North eight years.
“I led the fight against the PDP government. Why? Because there was an agreement that the government at that time would spend four years.
“But after four years, the government reneged on it, and I said no, that would be unfair.
“Just like I will be among those saying to the North that the South must be allowed to complete its tenure. If the South is not allowed to complete its tenure, then I have made a mistake in supporting it.”
Ameachi dumped the All Progressive Congress to join the likes of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; ex-governors Peter Obi (Anambra), Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna), Rauf Aregbesola (Osun) among other bigwigs at the ADC.
